Easy Ways to Help Kids Memorize Bible Verses

For some kids, memorizing comes easy, and for others it takes a little more time and effort. Either way, it can be done. Here are some tips and tricks you can experiment with to help your kids with memory retention.

  1. Repetition – This almost goes without saying, but a little repetition can go a long way. (We work on memory verses every morning before the kids leave the breakfast table. Usually after hearing and practicing the verse all week all three of my kids were able to recite it back.)
  1. Show the words – If you have a visual learner, this one is key! Let your kids see the words. Usually these students will capture the image of the text in their head and then read from that image in their mind.
  1. Remove one word at a time – Write the verse on a white board and erase one word at a time (even better if you let your child erase the word). Instead of asking for one big chunk for kids to memorize you are only asking for them to remember one word at a time. For some kids this is much more attainable.
  1. Use hand signs for key words – For young kids or kinesthetic learners, try making hand signs (or sign language) for the key words. This way they memorize the concept and flow first, then can fill in the other words as they go along.
  1. Review – Making a point to review the Bible verses you memorize is a great practice for long-term retention. With that being said, every time you revisit a verse with your kids, you are strengthening that neurological pathway.
  1. Be Consistent– Pick a time to go over your memory verses for kids and be consistent with it. You will be amazed how much your kids can memorize with just 5-10 minutes a day of practice and review!
  1. Pray and Trust– Memorizing Bible verses is like planting a seed. Do the work and then leave the rest up to God. As you pray for wisdom to teach your kids in the best way, trust that God will do what he will with the Word that is in your kid’s hearts. (Isaiah 55:11)

God’s Promise for Those Who Memorize Scripture

Do you ever feel like reading or memorizing scripture is a waste of time? If so, let me remind you that God’s word never accomplishes nothing! In fact, the Bible tells us that it never comes back empty and it always accomplishes what He wants it to do!

“So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire
and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

So, plant the seed of His Word and see what He does with it! It might save you from a harmful decision, help you avoid a temptation, know what to say in an argument, or give you peace in times of trouble. God’s Word never fails.
